Everything for the perfect hygiene in your rabbit hutch or small animal cage
The basic care of your small animal or rabbit depends on good hygiene. A good cleaning of the guinea pig cage, rabbit hutch or hamster cage is especially important for your little friend’s health. But how do you keep things clean? Below are some practical tips to help you ensure perfect hygiene in your pet's little house.
Choose the right bedding for your small animal!
First of all, it’s very important to choose the right bedding for your rabbit hutch or small animal cage. It‘s important to go for an absorbent bedding. This will ensure that the moisture is absorbed, odours are masked and your pet has a dry and clean home. There are various options when it comes to bedding and we’ve listed them for you:
Wood Fibre - Wood fibre is a commonly used bedding for small animals. It has a relatively high absorption capacity and is relatively economical in use. Wood fibre comes in various types and you can also choose wood fibre with a scent such as lemon or lavender. Wood fibre isn’t dust-free, which means it’s not suitable for all small animals and rabbits. For animals with allergies, it’s better to choose a bedding that contains less dust.
Hemp Fibre – Hemp fibre is an almost dust-free bedding that’s ideal for use in the small animal cage or rabbit hutch. Hemp fibre for rabbits or small animals is economical in use, environmentally-friendly and highly absorbent, so odours hardly stand a chance. Hemp fibres are hardly ever eaten, and if this does happen, it’s not immediately harmful, which is a great advantage over e.g. pressed pellets.
Wood or straw pellets – Wood or straw pellets can also be used as bedding for your small animals or rabbits. These pellets are compressed, which means that they are able to absorb and retain a lot of moisture. Does your small animal eat the bedding in the cage? Then these pellets aren’t really a good choice, because they are compressed and can therefore expand in the stomach.
Cotton bedding – Cotton bedding is also widely used in the small animal cage, mainly as hamster cage bedding. This bedding is very absorbent and can therefore be used for longer than most traditional bedding. Again, if your fluffy friends eat the bedding, you may want to change it. Cotton bedding is also environmentally-friendly and can be disposed of in the household waste container after use.
Small animal sand - Some small animals, such as chinchillas, love to bathe in small animal sand. They use it to clean their bodies from dirt, dust and filth. This chinchilla sand is best offered in a special sand bath for chinchillas and small animals.
Straw - Straw is an excellent ground cover for cold days. In most cases, straw is used in combination with a highly absorbent bedding such as hemp fibre. Straw has a fairly low absorption capacity, but provides the necessary warmth in the small animal house. Because a straw stem is hollow on the inside, heat is retained longer. Ideal for outdoor rabbits and mice during the cold winter months.
Use a small animal toilet in combination with good bedding
We understand that cleaning out the rabbit hutch or small animal paradise is probably the least exciting part of owning a pet. That's why we would like to give you a tip that will make your work easier and will save you some time: use a small animal or rabbit toilet! Yes, you read that right! With the right training, rabbits in particular, but also some other small animals, can be very well housetrained. Use a comfortable rabbit or small animal toilet in combination with an absorbent ground cover such as hemp fibre. By creating a special toilet area in the hutch, you ensure that you don’t have to clean it as often and your pets can enjoy a dry and clean hutch for longer.
Cleaning a rabbit hutch or small animal cage
Besides the right bedding and practical tips on hygiene in the cage, good cleaning is of course also important. A dirty cage attracts vermin and causes inconveniences. Of course, you want to prevent this from happening to your animals. It’s advisable to clean the cage or hutch completely once a week, and at least twice a week during the summer months. If you use a toilet, it’s advisable to change it daily. Remove all items from the cage: hiding places, feeding and drinking bowls, hay racks and toys … so you can reach every corner of the small animal cage. Clean everything, but don’t use any aggressive detergents. In our small animal shop you can find a special spray for small animal cages that is perfect for this purpose. Dry the cage thoroughly before putting everything back, so your pets can enjoy a dry and fresh home!
