Pets more popular than ever in Belgian households



It seems that our furry friends are increasingly becoming an integral part of our daily lives. A recent survey by BEPEFA has shown that pets are still immensely popular in Belgium, with as many as 6 out of 10 Belgian households owning one or more pets. This represents a slight increase compared to last year, indicating a significant growth in the number of pet parents since two years ago. 

 The survey also revealed that French-speaking and younger families in Belgium are more likely to have pets. Yet the love for pets is not limited to a single region or age group. Furthermore, we discovered that cats and dogs are especially popular among French speakers and younger people and there are more female cat parents than male.

A new pet


What's remarkable is that as many as 1 out of 5 respondents welcomed a new pet in the past year. This small increase is mainly due to people who took in a pet for the first time. But why do more and more people keep pets? The survey shows that for 4 out of 10 people, the main reason is that pets keep them company. Also, 15% of the respondents lost a pet, so they decided to take a new buddy into their home. In addition, 14% said they bought a new pet as a companion for their pet they already had.

An interesting finding from the survey is that more than a quarter of the pets are purchased from breeders. This highlights the importance of responsible pet ownership and the support of ethical practices when purchasing new pets.

Pets at work


Regarding pets in the workplace, the survey found that 1 out of 6 dog and cat parents are allowed to bring their pets to work. Although only 9% actually do so, it indicates that many companies are open to this concept nowadays.

Pet food


When it comes to buying pet food, there are some noticeable changes in buying habits. More Belgian pet parents prefer mixed channels for purchasing and put more emphasis on price. Vets and online pet food purchases have increased in popularity compared to two years ago. There has also been an increase in the number of people visiting pet shops, after COVID. 

 Interestingly, French speakers in Belgium are more likely to buy pet food from a vet than Dutch speakers. Furthermore, the survey shows that people older than 35 buy pet food online more often compared to last year (56% compared to 46%). People under the age of 35 appear to be the largest group buying pet food online. 

 The channels through which pet food is purchased also vary depending on the type of pet. Specialised channels are often used for dogs, while supermarkets are more often visited for cats.

 In terms of decision-making when buying pet food, the survey shows that 4 out of 10 Belgians have already decided which pet food to buy before they go to the shop. In addition, 29% of the respondents compare in-store or on the website before making a choice.

The impact of inflation


Despite possible price increases due to inflation, 6 out of 10 pet parents in Belgium indicate that they would not change anything about their pet's care. Only 1 out of 5 would go for a cheaper alternative. Less than 1 out of 10 would give their pet fewer snacks, wet food and/or dry food. The survey shows that the average Belgian pet parent wants to spend a maximum of 109 euros on their pet, of which a maximum of 79,4 euros is spent on pet food. 

The love for our furry companions 


It seems that pets not only capture our hearts, but also play an increasingly important role in our daily lives. Whether for companionship, as workmates or just pure out of love, pets have won a special place in the hearts of many Belgians. In short, pets are seen as valuable companions and family members. The rise in pet ownership and the changes in purchasing habits show that the love and care for pets continue to grow and evolve, making the bond between humans and animals stronger than ever before.
