The most commonly used size measurements for a dog bed are S, M, L, XL … or diameter in centimetres. The only thing is that a size 'M' with one manufacturer is not necessarily the same as a size 'M' with another manufacturer and it can also vary between different models of dog beds.

When buying a dog bed, it’s best to take into account the internal dimensions. These are the dimensions of the lying surface without the side edge. Often the external dimensions are mentioned. Feel free to take your tape measure and/or dog with you to the pet shop to be sure.
Senior dogs and joint problems
Is your dog getting older or suffering from arthritis? Then you better buy a larger dog bed or cushion. This’ll give your canine friend the opportunity to stretch out comfortably. Should you buy a size bigger for your growing puppy or not?
If you buy a bed the size of an 8-week-old puppy, it’ll quickly become too small within a few weeks. It can indeed be a good idea to buy a larger bed. Also do bear in mind that puppies may start to chew on the cushion or bed, because they are teething. When combined with a blanket, you can easily turn the large bed into a super cosy and warm den. By the time your dog is fully grown and has all his permanent teeth, you can still buy a bed that fits your dog’s body perfectly.
